Creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere is key to capturing authentic family moments. Encourage families to forget about the camera and focus on enjoying each other's company. Here are some tips to help create that environment:

• Hype them up! No one is going to feel comfortable or natural to enjoy time with you there or in front of a camera if they don't feel comfortable with themselves. This is your chance to be the ultimate hype person, talk up how great they look, encourage them at every turn.

• Smile! There's a scientific study on this, that smiling at someone while looking them in the eye fires off mirror neurons in the brain where they can't help but smile back at you. If you are smiling, they will smile too, and keep smiling for longer during moments together.

• Have a list of short action prompts! They're going to feel awkward if they don't know what to do. So tell them a few things they can do while you're taking photos, little games or activities that will help them get those smiles and laughs. Here are a few ideas:

  • Tickle fight! Kids and parents love this one, it can be used any time to bring life to the photo and cause some perfect giggles.

  • Run and give big hugs! You stand the kids a distance away from their parents and let them count to three before running towards them to give big hugs.

  • Walk and talk! have everyone hold hands and look at each other talking while walking towards you.

  • Think of your own! I've seen all sorts and used things from stick sword fights to picking flowers. Have fun with it!

Be unobtrusive:

As the photographer, you're the ultimate ninja too. Try to blend into the background and observe without interrupting the natural flow of interactions after giving prompts. Be patient! Authentic moments often arise when least expected, so be ready to capture them as they unfold.

Capturing authentic moments requires a keen eye and quick reflexes (looking at you again, photo ninja). Here are some techniques to help you capture those fleeting moments:

• Anticipate moments: Pay attention to the dynamics between family members and anticipate when a candid moment might occur.

• Shoot continuously: Keep your camera ready and shoot in burst mode to capture multiple frames per second, increasing your chances of capturing that perfect moment. A high shutter speed helps with this when there is a lot of quick movement going on.

• Focus on connections: Look for moments of genuine connection between family members, whether it's a shared laugh, a tender embrace, or a playful interaction.

• Shoot in RAW: I know everyone has differing opinions on this, but I ALWAYS shoot in RAW. Shooting in RAW format gives you more flexibility in post-processing, allowing you to fine-tune the exposure, color, and contrast of your images.
